Beverly Aadland, at the age of 17, was with actor Errol Flynn, who died of a heart attack in Vancouver, British Columbia on October 14, 1959. The book later inspired a one-woman Broadway show in which Tracey Ullman played the role of Florence.

In 1988, Beverly Aadland herself opened up about her relationship with Flynn in People magazine, stating that they were indeed involved in a sexual relationship during her teenage years and that she was with him at the time of his death.
